As the new year begins, it's a time for many of us to reflect on the past and set new goals for the next 12 months. For mamas, the start of a new year can bring an added sense of motivation and inspiration to strive for self-improvement and to show up as the best versions of themselves for their families. We at edamama are excited to share the new year's resolutions of some of our favorite mamas in our Connect community. These women have shared their aspirations for the coming year, from personal growth to family fun, and we can't wait to see them achieve their goals. So, read on to find out what they have to say about making the most of 2023, and who knows? You might just get some inspiration from them, too.
1. “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
“Since I was a college student, mahilig na talaga ako mag planner and journal. I love writing down all important tasks that need to be done, so I finish them on time. Madaming deadlines sa school at ayokong makalimot. But then, after college, hindi ko na natuloy ang habit na ito because I was caught up with my work as a small business owner and I also had a nigh-shift job on the side. This 2023, I want to get back into it again. For context, I am a mommy influencer and stay-at-home mom. I know having a planner like this will help me meet my deadlines for projects with different brands and stay on top of my motherhood life. I found the perfect planner for me at edamama. It comes with different colors, which i love!” - Mama Hazel
2. Healthy body for a healthy mind
“My goal for this year is to be more consistent with my yoga practice to help me relax and maintain a healthy body. Exercising, in any way or form, is beneficial for our overall well-being. One suggestion I have for other mamas is find an exercise routine that they enjoy and that fits their lifestyle. Here are my yoga must-haves!” - Mama Catherine
3. Small and steady win the race
“My new year’s resolution is to be fit and healthy. I know this is cliche, but I have set realistic goals for myself this year so that I don’t feel overwhelmed. Here are some tips to achieve your fitness goals this year: first, set small and realistic goals. For example, you could aim to run 5k by the end of January or even March. Then you can gradually increase either the distance or pace each month. Trust your body and pace. Second, and I find this really effective, is buddying up. Find a friend you can exercise with. This will help you be consistent and more accountable. You can even exercise with your partner, your child, or even a pet if you’re a furmama! Here’s my home fitness recommendations for the year” - Mama Girlie
4. Cooking up something exciting this 2023!
“My goal for 2023 is to learn how to cook. Not only will this help me save some cash and budget for my family (ahem, inflation is real!), but it will also inspire us to be more healthy and mindful of our diet. Having home-cooked meals will also save me time and energy from thinking about what to eat next. Other than these reasons, I also want to find a hobby that will help me destress and make me more confident! Here’s what’s on my edamama wishlist this new year!” - Mama Ivy Rose
5. Work hard, play harder!
“One of my goals for 2023 is to prioritize spending quality time with my children. Maybe more travels and quality time outdoors. The past few years, due to COVID, we've been mostly confined to our home and I want to make up for that lost time. I have been working hard and often preoccupied with work and responsibilities, and as a result, I sometimes feel like I have missed out on important developmental moments with my kids. Is this mom guilt? But anyway, this year, I want to be more present and actively engage in quality time activities with them while also balancing my responsibilities. Here are my travel must-haves to also help other mamas out who share the same goal as mine.” -Mama Paula
6. It’s okay to no not be okay
“One of the most impactful things I’ve learned during the pandemic is to surrender— surrender my need to control, my fears, and everything that worries me. I dedicate 2023 to self-care, and that may mean different things to different mamas. For me, however, it means reminding myself to just feel negative feelings and remember that they’ll go away soon. Journaling helps me with that. Journaling allows me to externalize my thoughts and feelings by putting them down on paper. This helps clear my mind and create a sense of distance from negative or overwhelming thoughts. Additionally, it also helps me process and make sense of difficult emotions and experiences, which can lead to a greater sense of understanding of myself.” - Mama Alli
7. Read, read, and read some more!
“Cliche, but, New Year for me symbolizes hope and new beginnings. It’s the perfect time to reassess my life and plan my goals accordingly. My new year's resolution is to read some more while drinking lactation aids.” - Mama Ciara
8. Be selfish once in a while
“I thought being a mother is all about selflessness. Hindi pala. You can’t keep pouring into your family’s cups because you might end up emptying yours. This 2023, I devote to give time to myself. Whenever I would find myself in a cluttered mind, I will give myself 2 hours in the morning to accomplish my morning skincare and exercise. 2 hours at night as well, to recuperate and rest.” - Mama Valen
9. I resolve to lean into FUN
“It can be easy to get caught up in daily responsibilities and worries, which can make it difficult for me to fully enjoy the present moment and the fun experiences around me. I realized lately how important it is to let go of those concerns and focus on the present, especially when spending time with my 2-year-old daughter. This year, I resolve to set aside some specific time for fun and relaxation and make it a priority. By making an effort to be present and fully engaged in the moment, I can create more meaningful and enjoyable experiences with my daughter. More playtime is what I mean ;)” - Mama Donna
Ultimately, the key to achieving these resolutions is to be intentional about making time for them, and to be flexible when things don't go as planned. By setting achievable goals and being willing to adapt and adjust when necessary, mamas can make the most of the new year and create the best possible outcome for themselves and their families.
But…
We also want to say that wherever you are with your goals right now, you’re doing a great job! Sure, these resolutions will help you improve, but know this: right now, as you are, you are enough. Even if you forgot about your child’s homework, even if you haven’t showered for days, even if you feel like you are hanging on by a thread, you are enough. As mothers, we must forgive ourselves when we make mistakes and keep trying. We owe it to ourselves to celebrate our small and big wins— and all the in-betweens.
