Holy Week
As Holy Week approaches, Filipino families everywhere are starting to plan how to celebrate this religious holiday with their families. Fortunately, in the Philippines, there are a variety of traditions and activities that are perfect for families to participate in together.
First and foremost, Holy Week is a time for reflection and prayer for many Filipinos. It begins on Palm Sunday, when Catholics attend mass and receive palm branches to commemorate Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. Throughout the week, there are various masses and religious processions such as the following:
1.) Visita Iglesia: As mentioned earlier, Visita Iglesia involves visiting seven different churches and praying at each one. This tradition is believed to have originated in Rome, and was brought to the Philippines by Spanish colonizers.
2.) Pabasa ng Pasyon: Pabasa ng Pasyon is a traditional Filipino devotional practice, where the Passion of Christ is read aloud in a chanting manner. It usually takes place in the days leading up to Good Friday.
3.) Senakulo: Senakulo is a traditional play that reenacts the story of the Passion of Christ. It is usually performed by local communities and is a popular attraction during Holy Week.
For families, Holy Week is also a time for bonding and togetherness. Many families choose to spend time at home, cooking traditional dishes like "binignit," a sweet soup made with tubers and coconut milk, and "pansit," a noodle dish symbolizing long life. They even prepare a big “handaan” where the whole family and extended family is invited.
Another thing many Filipino families do during the Holy Week is travel to different parts of the country to visit relatives or participate in local traditions. One popular destination is the province of Pampanga, where devotees engage in "Lenten rites" like self-flagellation and crucifixion reenactments.
If you're planning to travel during Holy Week, be prepared for large crowds and heavy traffic. But the rewards are worth it, as you'll get to experience a unique side of Filipino culture and tradition.
Here are several articles we have gathered that you may find helpful as you prepare for your family travels.
However, no matter how you choose to celebrate Holy Week, it's important to remember the true meaning of the holiday and to cherish the time spent with family and loved ones. Whether you attend mass, cook traditional dishes, or travel to new places, Holy Week is a time to come together and appreciate the blessings in our lives.
So, Filipino parents, as you plan your family's Holy Week activities, remember to stay joyful, grateful, and faithful. With these values in mind, you're sure to have a memorable and meaningful holiday.
