How To Protect Your Child From Dengue

ByMonica OtayzaJuly 29, 2022
The Philippines is no stranger to dengue, a tropical disease caused by a virus carried by mosquitoes. Through the years, adults and children alike have been victims of the dengue virus, which causes fever, rashes, headaches, and body pain.
While most cases of dengue are often mild and go away on their own after a week, there are also instances where it requires hospital care. If not treated on time, dengue can lead to complications, and that’s something parents try to avoid.
With dengue season here yet again, there are many preventive measures you can do to help protect your child and the entire family from dengue fever.
1. Take preventive measures
a. Use mosquito repellents.
There are many mosquito and insect repellents available in the market which help keep mosquitoes away, especially from your little ones. It’s best to double-up on the repellents by using child-friendly lotions or sprays on your little one’s  skin, and adding a mosquito repellent sticker on their clothes for an added layer of protection.
b. Keep the house clean.
While dengue mosquitoes are found outdoors, it is important to keep your home safe as well. Ensure that all corners of your house are clean. Do not keep still, standing water inside your home as this can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
c. Invest in mosquito-repelling gear.
At home, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Add mosquito-repelling equipment at home, like bug zappers, Citronella candles, and mosquito-repelling plants.
d. Clothe your little ones properly.
When going out, ensure that your little one is wearing full-sleeved clothes for better protection from dengue. Wearing body-hugging clothes can allow mosquitoes to bite easily, so loose clothing is a much safer option to wear outdoors.
2. Know the symptoms
As parents, it’s important to know the symptoms of dengue and stay vigilant for any signs of the disease in any of your family members. Knowing the symptoms of dengue helps you manage it on time, and helps you provide the proper treatment for your family.
Symptoms of dengue ever include high fever (as high as 40°C), vomiting, headaches, pain behind the eyes, rashes, fatigue, bruising, bleeding in the nose or gums, and muscle/body pain. If these symptoms are present or if you suspect that your child has dengue, do not delay contacting your doctor.
3. Dealing with dengue
Dengue fever is diagnosed through a blood test. To make the right diagnosis, your doctor will evaluate the symptoms and send the blood sample in for testing.
Symptoms of dengue can start any time between four days to two weeks since being bitten by a dengue mosquito. Symptoms usually persist for two to seven days before the patient slowly makes a recovery. Most dengue cases go away within two weeks and will not cause lasting problems on the patient.
Taking precautions and keeping away from dengue-prone areas lessens chances of your family contracting the disease. Always remain vigilant and stay proactive when you think someone is exhibiting symptoms of dengue in order to limit and prevent complications from happening.
