Daily use of diapers combined with Philippines’ humid tropical weather can sometimes result in diaper rashes in our little ones. Now, mamas in edamama app’s Connect ask: what’s the best way to deal with diaper rashes? Here are some tips and tools on how to lessen those rashes that bring discomfort to our babies.
1.) Ensure frequent diaper change
Rashes are due to trapped heat and skin friction with soiled nappies. Ensure less rashes by practicing frequent diaper changes – even if the diaper still appears to be dry. Depending on the baby's age, diaper changes should be as frequent as every hour (newborns to infants) to at least every 2-3 hours for toddlers.
Avoid wetting mattresses during diaper changes with a mat, and always bring a portable diaper changing pad so you can change diapers whenever, wherever.
2.) Clean it up well - wash and dry
It is better to wash the baby bum and genitals with cotton and warm water for newborns and a full wash with mild soap for toddlers. Make sure the washed area has been thoroughly dried with a clean, soft towel.
When outside the home or on the road, you can use sprays such as Tiny Buds Extra Sensitive and Kleenfant Diaper Changing Spray.
3.) Prevention is better than cure
To ensure better protection against rashes, some mamas swear by Mustela Vitamin Barrier Cream, a preventive (and helps cure if rash is already present) tool against red rashes. It’s mild enough even for newborn use, but strong against red, itchy rashes. Safe for daily use, put a generous amount on your baby’s bum every diaper change sans the minty feel that may be uncomfortable for babies.
You can also find diaper creams with the Zinc Oxide formula and moisturizing properties to protect the skin from future rash recurrence. Check out Biolane’s Dermopediatric Diaper Rash that’s also rich in almond oil and hydra-bleine that heals the skin.
4.) Look out for organic products
If you want mild options for treating rashes, there are many available in the market. There’s Sanosan’s Organic Baby Diaper Rash Ointment, a gentle cream that helps heal baby’s skin. You can also check Lab46 Babycare Diaper Soothing Cream which doubles as an anti-itch cream (for insect bites, etc), thanks to its anti-inflammatories.
Paraben-free Cycles’ Sensitive Protective Diaper Cream meanwhile has White Petrolatum, Vitamin E, and Bisabolol, which are ingredients that speed up healing and prevent scarring.
5.) Choose breathable products
Whether you are using cloth or disposable diapers, find brands that best suit your baby. It’s like an experiment – some diapers may just not be compatible with your little one. In disposable diapers, check out air flow, absorption, and if the size fits just right. For cloth diapers, get those that have maximum absorption and are light to wear.
6.) Consult pediatrician if rashes persist
You must bring your child to the hospital immediately if rashes appear too red, watery, bleeds or has puss, or when the rash is accompanied by fever. Watch out for pain signs in your baby as well when they urinate or during bowel movement.
