You might have even read about this somewhere on the internet or social media. Whatever the case may be, PCOS is something that you’ve probably come across at least once. In this article, we’ll give you the info you need to learn more about this condition and how it can affect the lives of moms everywhere!
What is PCOS?
PCOS, also known as polycystic ovarian syndrome, is a condition that usually manifests with the following symptoms:
- Irregular periods
- Acne (e.g., oily skin, pimples)
- Extra body hair in places where there usually isn’t much hair
- Hair loss
As the name implies, women who have this condition have multiple cysts in their ovaries. These cysts are a result of a malfunction in your ovaries’ ovulation process. Instead of producing one follicle, which eventually becomes the egg that gets ovulated, your ovaries produce several small ones. These then cause an imbalance in your hormones, such as testosterone, which then cause irregular periods, difficulty in getting pregnant, and other typical PCOS symptoms.
Is This Treatable?
While PCOS does seem like a rather troublesome thing to have, it is fortunately treatable. What’s more, these treatments are rather straightforward and accessible enough for you to carry out. As a result, you’ll be able to get your ovaries functioning like they were back to normal and you’ll also be able to live your life normally too! So, how does one treat PCOS?
The main method of treating PCOS would be through various medical methods. Most of these methods focus on getting your hormones back to their normal levels and proportions. For example, birth control pills can help improve the several symptoms that accompany PCOS–such as irregular periods and facial hair.
Therapy with other hormones and hormone-controlling medication are another way to help treat the symptoms of PCOS. Of course, these don’t offer a cure. However, these can still help improve your quality of life and get your ovaries as close to normal function as they can be.
Aside from this, another way to help treat PCOS symptoms would be to make some changes to your lifestyle. In this case, losing weight if you’re overweight could help mitigate some PCOS-related symptoms.
PCOS Stories
Sure, it’s nice to read about how PCOS can be treated. However, it might not do as good of a job as actual stories from mothers and would-be mothers who had to deal with the condition. Fortunately, some mamas were kind enough to share with us their personal experiences with PCOS and how things turned out for them.
Mama Anavi’s Story
Mama Anavi is a 32-year-old mother from Davao who got diagnosed with PCOS back in 2015. Working in the medical field, she knew people had a lot of expectations of her. This may have made it harder for her to deal with PCOS. However, she shares:
“Yet God is truly a God who turns the impossible into amazing. Answered prayer, I got pregnant last 2019 at the age of 30 and delivered a healthy baby girl via normal delivery last May 2020, and it was in the middle of a pandemic…As of now, I am still fighting against PCOS. Mood swings, and irregular cycles hit me hard while taking care of a toddler. Yet I have high hopes that everything will be fine soon and hopefully we will have a miracle baby soon.”
Mama Joie’s Story
Mama Joie has been diagnosed with PCOS since she was 16. She’s been on pills ever since to regulate her period. Since she got married last February of 2021, she and her husband have been trying their hardest to conceive. Even with the medication she was given, they still had difficulty. However, she had this to share:
“...by natural means got delayed after a month na nag-focus kami sa pag-change ng aming lifestyle. Lost 10lbs, which is pasok pa din sa BMI ko. Then minaintain ko na lang. Did some afternoon walks hitting 10K steps a day and diet. Tingin namin nakahelp talaga at the same time hindi kami pareho stressed ni Eric.”
Mama Arianne’s Story
Mama Arianne was also diagnosed with PCOS when she was 16. Her OB already told her that she’d have a difficult time getting pregnant, even if she took the meds prescribed. But, despite the challenge, she was able to get pregnant. She shares her experience below:
“I tried pills, which helped regulate my cycle. But what really helped me was when I tried to change my diet. I still remember the time I woke up and decided to eat healthier, parang movie lang?! I gave up rice and sweets then I noticed that I’d get my period monthly na.”
Despite the effects PCOS has on a woman, it’s a condition that’s still treatable. As such, there are ways to overcome the difficulties PCOS brings upon a woman’s life. The stories of these three edamamas are proof of that! So, if you’re an aspiring mama with PCOS, don’t let it faze you! You just need to consult with your OB, get the right medication, make the right adjustments, and you’ll be able to eventually get over this condition! Of course, it may take a while. However, it’ll be worth it in the end!
