Beach and Pool Safety for Toddlers: How to Keep Your Child Safe and Happy In And Around the Water
Temperatures are starting to rise again, so what better way to cool down and beat the summer heat than to take a trip to the beach or have a splashing’ good time in the pool.
The summers of our childhood are memorable — and most of the fun memories of them are us swimming and having a fun time with family and friends. It will be the same for our little ones, so allow them to relish their time in the water.
Letting them have fun swimming also means keeping them safe all throughout. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is a leading cause of death for children. In the US alone, “children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates. Most drownings in children 1 to 4 happen in swimming pools. Drowning can happen even when children are not expected to be near water, such as when they gain unsupervised access to pools. Fatal drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1 to 4 and the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children 5 to 14, behind motor vehicle crashes.”
Take precautions and err on the safe side when your child is in or near the water. These tips might come in handy:
1. Never ever leave your child unattended.
Drowning can happen in mere seconds. It can happen when the guardian is distracted or not looking. So being vigilant is a must — someone must be able to watch the child in the water. Using your phone or engaging in distracting conversations with others can limit your ability to keep a close watch on your little one. If possible, stay as close as possible to your swimming child.
2. Teach your little one how to swim.
Swimming is a life skill that kids should learn. Knowing how to swim can save their or someone’s life. Not only do swimming lessons equip children with the know-how on water safety, they also improve their coordination and flexibility while benefiting their cardiovascular health. So if you’re still undecided whether to enroll your child in a swimming class or not, this is your sign to go ahead and let them learn how to swim!
3. Have your kid wear a life jacket.
Even strong swimmers can drown. Wearing a life jacket can save your life, so make sure your toddler is wearing one when they are on a boat or swimming in open water like the ocean.
4. Opt for bright-colored swimwear for your child.
The color visibility test showed that the color of your little one’s swimsuit can save their life because they are more visible in the water. It’s also easier to keep track of them when you are at a crowded beach or resort.
